I had one that kept giving me that shape. It might have been nutrient related. Finally at the very end of the season just before the first frost it grew a nice oval one. The plant had been short on zinc, boron, phosphorus, and I don't recall whst else.

I should say... the advantage of that shape is, it wont lift the vine up as much!
