If I had to guess it’s probably the same reason I use white weed fabric to get the sun to reflect up on the under side of the canopy.

Using perlite will improve the light reflection, but it is still not a perfect coverage due to diffuse reflection. Can you try to use aluminum film to get good light reflection? In my country, it is very common to use this aluminum film to cover apples, which can make the color of apples evenly distributed. I think it can also be used to grow giant pumpkins. Its reflectivity is very high! This aluminum film is even more needed for growing pumpkins in greenhouses. It is very cheap!
