I think that CO2 certainly is a limiting factor when growing giant pumpkins.

The competition for corn bushels/ acre is outdoors, but they do get more bushels when they have still air in the a.m. and the soil is biologically active and releasing CO2 when the plants are absorbing it.
From this graph it looks like 7 am to 9 am is the critical window when, even if you are growing outdoors, you want your patch soil to be releasing c02 under the leaves (and for outdoor growers, to not have any breeze blowing that c02 away).
