The crust thing does sound like pseudo science. I think you're on the right track just to chop it up fine like you did. I'm not in favor of unnecessary waterings, the way I look at it, every time a grower adds water it could tip the balance in favor of disease. Water plus undecomposed organics sounds like a recipe for disease. Just an idea, but the far better solution would be to lay an extra old piece of greenhouse plastic atop the soil. That would trap the gas in and deny the aquatic pathogens any quarter. We can get innovative and micromanage our dirt in ways that farmers with thousands of acres cannot, so I do think we need our own set of ideas that fall somewhere between those of the home gardener and the land grant university...
I hope that's the kind of crowdsourced comment you were looking for.
