Congratulations Lee!! Sounds like everyone had a good time! Can growers around the area enter the contest or do they have to live on Whidbey Island? Our Central Market contest had a "banner year" as well.

Stan, We are strickly small town and want to encourage local people to join in, plus our prizes are extremely modest compared to the bigger contests. First place took home $45 in gift certificates. So for now we will stay local and who knows, maybe some of us will come down to Central Market next year and give you a run for your money! Lee

OK everybody, a bit of geography lesson. Whidbey Island is about 50 miles long, kinda narrow and sits in Puget Sound north of Seattle. It is home to about 70,000 souls and the biggest employer is Naval Air Station Whidbey. These guys fly EA6Bs, the radar jammers that shut down Saddam's defences. They also fly the slow flying spy planes like the one the Chinese shot down about a year or so ago. Further down the Island it is a mix of small farms and lots of retirees and then down south is a bedroom commuter community primarily for Everett and the Boeing plant. The middle of the Island is actually quite dry (average rainfall 20 inches) because we sit downwind from the Olympic Mountains out west of us. Great place to visit, but don't plan on staying here.......too many people like it already. And if you are still interested, remember, it really is too cool to grow the monster pumpkins!
