It was the most exciting weigh-off I've ever witnessed. Equally important to most Circleville natives was beating Half Moon Bay by 1/2 pound. It just doesn't get any closer than that!
Having lost three over 1000 pounds last year, it just wasn't right that Doctor Liggett wasn't the one to beat... but he more than made up for it this year.
Even more notable was that he chose Circleville to weigh it. Bob and Jo epitomize what the Pumpkin Show is all about. At 101 years, it is a very storied celebration.
Several years ago, Doctor Liggett and Nancy Martin got together and figured a way to expand the number of growers who weigh at Circleville. This new record is a product of that dedication. Even more notable is that only growers within a 21-mile radius of Circleville can weigh there.
Kudos Bob and Jo!

Sounds like a great weight off. Why do they have the 21 mile radius rule. There has to be a story behind that.

The Pumpkin Show has always been about Pickaway County and the early ones were all about area farmers showing off their bounty and growing prowess. It was more of a final get-together before winter.
We could make the weigh-off a GPC site, but we already have one a few miles down the road in Chillicothe. The SOGPG is a success due largely to Circleville's rules. Also, if Circleville went GPC, they would probably not want the weigh-off any longer in the middle of town.
There has been much thought on the subject, but Circleville has been good to the growers and tradition means a lot to the area.

Fourth was Ken Speakman's grandson at 919 pounds and we were fifth at 854.5. Dummy me failed to get a photo of the tally board. I'm sure someone else who was there will chime in.
