I have been trying for literally a decade and my biggest was 42 in 2015. Every year I try and don't succeed. I started when I was 6.

Are you using large genetics? The field kins really like our cool & mild maritime climate. Your weather might be more variable and harsh? They might mature faster as a result. Nutrients water and protect the plants from harsh extremes as much as possible overhead irrigation or shade to take the edge off the hot sunny days. Big field kins probably thrive in slightly cooler temps than any of the other gpc categories and partial shade might not necessarily be bad if it helps reduce heat stress.

I am going to focus on them next year. Basically I will run them exactly like AG's except the AG pumpkins handle warm temps better I think. I will probably want the field kin temps to be in the low 70's after about DAP 10.
Curious to know what anyone else thinks. Good luck...

Are you training and pruning like an AG? Do you have good genetics? Do you have a stretch of weather that is above 60 and less than about 90? Stretch of nights over 50? Stress will cause them to ripen. Are you getting at least 6 weeks of growth before ripening starts?

Only ONE fruit per plant, but grow as many plants as you want. I will also be concentrating on FPs since i have not since 2014...a guy who had never grown them for size of any kind at my workplace has tried my #37 of which i gave him 8 plants; no special care at all and he had i think 29 fruits on 8 plants and some were REALLY big by his account. these were 116 Grunert (81 Wolf X SELF) X SIB, so, all 81 Wolf genes; so, bypassing wanting a bunch of normally-sized ones, more PLANTS but fewer FRUITS would be my suggestion, and the usual, extreme vine-burying that i never do, lol---sure was great to have a 110-pounder in '14 with that Grunert seed. 3rd place at Oswego, NY; just get seeds that have GROWN a big Momma! eric g
