The field pumpkin that won Durham Fair in Connecticut was apparantly grown off a Big Max. A Big Max is not a field pumpkin. If it was really a Big Max it should have been weighed along with the other (Atlantic Giant) pumpkins. Field pumpkins are orange (unripe: green) with a very hard stem. Big Max, like all other maxima fruit have a soft(er) stem.

There are 'big this' and 'big that' varieties. Possibly... it was a field kin but the grower put the name down wrong. I'd split it 40/60 wrong name/wrong variety. Its likely the wrong variety but... Perhaps there were no other entries so they went with the closest one. Wrong but based on good intentions. It happens.

The officials at Durham are some of the best growers in the world they know the difference. Maybe it was the name the grower gave it or the name of parent the grower gave it.
