So....I lay awake at night thinking of tomato things. Has anyone noticed if the bigger seeds produce bigger plants/tomatoes? Some of my tomatoes have a pretty big size difference from one seed to the next. Are bigger seeds better? Is it because of cross pollination? When I hand pollinate I usually try to use pollen from a different plant. The flower self polinates and cross polinates. Can this be the size difference?. *Lays awake when he should be sleeping.

Cherry tomatoes have smaller seeds / competition tomatoes have bigger seeds, in my experience.

Scott, I share the same sleeplessness condition, lol.

My 5.54 Greene 2022 had ~300 seeds. This was an open pollination using an electric toothbrush. While it was an open pollination, bee activity in my backyard is rare. That being said, 30 of those seeds were very, very large, easily double/triple the size of a typical Domingo seed. I isolated those 30 XL seeds and have grown out five in hopes it would result in plants/fruits with superior genetic qualities. For me, that means large megablooms and heavier tomatoes

BLUF: my results showed no noticeable difference in plant vigor, megabloom formation or heavier fruits.

I know this response doesn't directly answer the question you posed, which is what causes some seeds to be bigger. However, after growing those XL seeds I've found no observable improvements.

This fellow is a multiple world record holder and his method could probably apply to most plants. He did not try for size but productivity and the sheer size of his plants. He has been verified as getting 1368 lbs. of tomatoes from 4 plants. If you want his book might be available on Abebooks along with Marvs
