Gone With The Win

Has anyone ever had sterile seeds from a sunflower? Also If I planted the same color sunflower seeds say White with grey striped. And it produced different colored seeds on various plants, does that mean the mother seeds I planted came from different sunflower heads? Basically the Question is can you plant sunflower seeds from the same sunflower and have different colored seeds from the mother seed?

The colour of the seeds is affected by this year's pollination. If you grow white corn and yellow corn beside each other, the kernels of this year's corn will be white and yellow. The same holds true for sunflowers. For pumpkins too, except there you only find out a year later.

Brad i had 8 sunflower plants growing close together in one row. 6 plants grew 20 feet or more with my shortest plant 17'-3" and tallest at 22'-7". Also i had 3 flowers with black seeds and the other 5 flowers were white with black strips like the mother seed was.4 plants were from the seed that grew john buttlers 26'-8" plant and 4 plants were from the 26'-8" seeds. One of the seeds gew 3 of the 4 black seeded flowers.

My biggest flower 15" black seeds 21'-4" tall only found 3 viable seeds and my tallest plant also black seeded was about 85% stirile ? And one white striped flower had a poor seed count but the others seem to have a decent seed count ? Have you ever seen such big differences in seed count with plants growing next to each other ?

You would almost think the bees had a preference for a certain plant, presuming they all flowered at the same time. At our weigh-off this year we also had several heads with almost no viable seeds at all and others that were packed.
