North Of The Border

I have small, 3 inch tall, tomatoe seedlings, and their seed leaves just fell off. Why? Help is appreciated.

Overwatering or ph issue or lack of nutrients? They quickly pull nutrients out of the old leaves when the roots are stressed or if the plant needs water or nutrients. . . the old leaves will get sacrificed. Various reasons w/overwatering most likely... light may be a factor too.

It is not of any consequence at this stage, your plant will get plenty of energy from it’s true leaves.
Some people intentionally remove the cotyledons at this stage.

No damage at soil line, light stays on above it from 6.30 Am, to 8.30 Pm every day, so 14 hours of light, could be lack of nutrients, as they are in 1/4 gallon pots, with 2 per pot, and ph is that of the garden soil, or about 7.5, i may have overwatered, because i saw the soil stayed fairly wet, and cut back on the water, and the last plant has ot yet lost its leaves.

So yes, and the soil pH is around 7.5

Yea, that’s why they fell off. Put premium seed starting mix on the list for next year. They could come around but once they stall, they might get mad at you and only produce little maters. I have a few extra plants if you want to make a trip.

Hey -btw grower... there is a chart online that shows which nutrients become less available to the plant via the roots when the PH moves up to where you are at. You may find a foliar product that can help supplement what the plants are haven’t a hard time sucking up. Try to counter the PH effects.? Without throwing the soil off any further.?..just a thought.. There’s also fertilizer out there that will ph balance itself automatically to 6.5... veg formula, flower formula, even bloom and fruit growth formulas.that would prolly keep you closer to where you need to be .. Pricey though.
