This is a question in regard to framac's diary post.
1. How often does this happen
2. Is it presumably better to have a split than a partial detachment...
3. Is this usually fatal to the tomato (does rot get in?)
4. On very large sets where part of the tomato may detach should we be looking to create artificial stem splits?.

...So that all parts of the tomato are supplied with food and can continue to grow...
5) whem would be the ideal time to split the stem artificially?

I have suffered detaching parts before so I am trying to gain some knowledge. I think that similar to what the pumpkin guys do... there might be a surgical solution.

Yeah i thought about it but never tried it. I have had better luck when the stem does split compaired to the stem just pealing away from one side. In both cases you have a chance of water settling in the void and causing rot ! Ll you can do is expiriment with it to see if it works. If you were to try it i would suggest trying it when the tomato is fairly small were the tomato has a better chance to heal.

Never thought about splitting the stem.
Never had a splitted stem.

Well here is my update. Tomato is growing like crazy. I'll tape tomorrow and am expecting 22-23 inches at day 27-29. I guess the best way to describe the tomato in question is that it was a double caterpillar that connected on one end, almost like a horse shoe. The stem was connected to both sides of the blossom and as the tomato really took off, the growth split the stem basically right in the center. There is a cavity that concerns me a lot. I am going to use sulfur in hope of avoiding rot. I am hoping that the stem doesn't pull off one side, and would consider running the split higher to avoid that. ANY suggestions would be appreciated.
