...Eddy must of fixed you up with some old Boudyo super slammers seeds. Always wondered what happened to those after I lost an auction a couple of years ago.

I had to look back at previous years diaries
In 2017 my best of 5.24 was started June 11 In 2018 my 6.32 dmg, 5.60 and 5.08 was started June 3
It will be a late start again this year. Close on house May 3rd, with moving and soil prep...maybe late May early June to start. All my biggest have come from June starts.

Garden Rebel, Eddy, won the Gale Woods auction last year. I know he had in possession one time the super slammer seed package...All 8 pounders grown before last year. Maybe, Eddy will win the the prize for the first 10 pounder.

The problem with the June starts....you have to use the MacCoy method....Not enough time for nipple high. I would say, late June as the latest for a 5+ tomato. September is difficult. You have to be on top of fungicides for late blight, I think with supplemental heating might be able to get even higher. I learned alot growing for October weighoffs. Some year...I will get an early start.

I started all my BIG boys last night. But I would have preferred to start them April 1st or a bit before. I just decided to jump into the World Record tomatoes last night. You know how it is when you see all those packs of seed and IT hits you!I started them March 15th in 2012 and that was too early [but okay for other varieties]. I got new 6 mil poly for my 10' x 20' greenhouse and I will grow a few in there because I can control the environment and compare to others grown just outside in the garden. I have a lot of soil amendments to do. Been dealing with health issues and have to make things as physically easy as possible. Going to use my Unkle Dunkel's this year.

I "see" now. You guys start yours to coincide with weigh-off dates, County Fairs, and the like; which seems to be at least a month or more later than the normal start them 8 weeks before the last frost date.

In my opinion fused blossoms are KEY. Biggest tomato I have ever had from a single "regular" blossom was just under 4 and half pounds from a Gildo Pietroboni plant, and a variety called "Istra" that I got from Slovenia that produced fruit between 3 lbs. and 4.20 lbs. This one I also want to cross to a profusely-producing fused blossom variety. I also want to cross Mega-Marv to a fused blossom variety. It seems to me that the F-1 crosses are the stage that seems to produce the best. Sometimes F-2. But as they get more stable they tend to taper off in the characteristics that we Big growers want. in my opinion.

Welcome back to giant tomatoes. The megamarv has been crossed to the fused blossom varieties a few years back. Wixom Chris crossed the MegaMarv x Domingo to make the MegaDom and the same winter crossed the MegaMarv x BigZac to make the MegaZac. There are growers now, I think that are up to F3 on these crosses. The next winter he crossed the F1 MegaDom x F1 MegaZac and the reverse to make the MegamuttD and MegamuttZ. My best 2 years in a row were from the MegamuttD in 2017 and MegamuttD F2 in 2018.
Next summer I should have three generations of MegamuttD's in my garden. I think that tapering off would be from not selecting the best of each F series. The F'1s can show heterosis but I would prefer the desirable traits to be locked in by high F numbers.
