Roughly how big of a root system do the mater plants put out? I see some people talking about tilling around the plants but I don't want to get too close and damage any roots.

Nooo!!! Don't do it! They have a good root system.

They will send roots out in all directions & they tend to be fairly superficial in rich topsoil. I definitely do not recommend tilling about plants. On my grafted plants at the end of the season, some of those roots can be 8-10’ long.
