I have been growing in central Pennsylvania for quite a few years now. Our summers used to be hot and often pretty dry. For the last 4 years we have had cooler and much wetter summers. All of the tomatoes tended to be smaller and often ripened later than in what was the usual ordinary summer. I think this weather with cooler and wetter may now be our norm rather than the unusual. Have any of you growing for awhile noticed a change from what you usually had expected in the way of weather?

In the NW just our usual ups and downs over the years. This year is record heat in the 100s here in Oregon and I wasn't prepared for that.

I agree with you totally Marv. Same here in Warwood, WV, just too wet. When we do have warm days the patch can feel like a tropical rain forest with the humudity. I was going for my PB 4#3 ozs. and was a little excited for awhile and fruit ripened at 22"..3#13ozs. with little care (pulled weeds) hand watered twice. Otherwise wet and wetter...

Last year in michigan we had 23 days over 90° this year only 4 and that was in june. But it has been dry here too.i think my tomatoes do better in the heat. Looks to me that tomato weights are down a little from last year but their is still a lot of time to go.

Here in coastal Virginia it's been wet, wet, wet.
Everything in my Garden has suffered.
Disease has killed all my edibles.
Rain has ruined pollination for every MB I've had except for one.
That one was barely over a pound when finished.
We had 8 inches in three days just last week.
Not been a very good year.

We here in central Ontario were wetter/cooler than normal up until Aug 1st. Then the skies dried & we haven't had much rain since. We're like Michigan, only 4-5 days of extreme heat this season. Temps are cooler now, with several night dropping down to 36-38 degrees F. Nights are starting to warm up a bit, but daytime temps are expected to stay @ 68-72 F for a week or so.
Good luck all.

This has been the second year in a row that my lawn has stayed green and growing all summer. It has been over a month since my garden has been dry enough to water. I am expecting to be fighting disease pressure all September. Even so, I do not think it has been terrible weather here for growing except for that one early June hailstorm. Hoping for a warm September.

Going to rain tonight.

Up to 2 inches expected.

Sigh.

The coolest August since I have been growing in 2010. The last week and half of July was cool too. Have been covering pumpkins nearly every night with blankets since late July ( below 60 at night ). Now Sept is off to a cool start also. Its out of my control for now, so im just trying to keep the plants healthy and fruits from rotting. Weights should be down at the weighoffs in the North East this fall.

I do think the tomatoes grow longer and bigger with this kind of weather though :)

Ideal tomato temperature is 80 degrees in the daytime and 60 degrees at night. Cooler is better than hotter. Tomatoes can grow in cool but stop growing and get ripe in hot. Too cool and rain without much sun cannot be good though.
