Wixom MI.

I think that we will see a lot of late tomatoes comming in this year. I see many growers growing early and late crops this year and i don't remember seeing that in the past ?

The rest of mine will be later than normal because of my awful case of BER.I've lost 70 to 80 percent to ber.

Hail made my garden all late tomatoes. It is ok, I will have fun at Gale Woods. Chris you are only 10 hours by car or 2 hours by airplane from Minneapolis. If you get a really big one bring it here. I won't even complain if my 9 pounder gets beaten by your 9 1/2 pounder.

Dan, you mention about 70-80 percent loss to ber. I am wondering if you run your potassium way high. That can restrict calcium which causes ber but am thinking it also can lead to larger tomatoes. I have been pushing k,ca and mg this year...still a few months to the results.

The potassium isn't high,I just wasn't able to get the gypsum in until right before transplant, it needs a long time to break down and become available to the plants.

You might try a cheated calcium as a foliar spray doesn't take any time to break down in the soil or doesn't get locked up in the either.
Of course I like the Tomato Turbo the best.

I did try a foiler calcium but I think I put to much on and burned some leaf edges,so I quit, maybe I should try a low low steady dose and see if it works

No,I used it all up,the calcium that I used wasn't chelated, and I know chelated is much better, I really don't know what it would take to halt the ber,it's almost to late at this point,.

Are you growing them in a greenhouse or out in the open ? Are you feeding them everytime you water ? Are you feeding them by tea and what do you put in it ?

Maybe it's the itchy fingers giving them the ber,some are in the greenhouse and some are outside, and they are on automatic drip watering system, so they are not fed with every watering,I only feed them if they show signs of something that is out of wack, I think we tend to kill them with kindness, to much stuff that throws soil life out of balance, if you see something lacking,try to determine what it is and then suppliment them with that particular nutrient,there's good websites that help identify problems with plants.

I wonder being indoors if you are watering evenly enough ? I have seen roots travel out 7-8 feet from the main stem ! Wet to dry conditions can cause BER...

Thanks dan, i realy like what i am seeing with that Thurber cross. Both plants are identical and appears to have megablooms on the second and third set of flowers too.

I feel your pain! I lost 2 nice one's to ber.. just tried lime in bucket of water n drench the soil. now wait n see if it works..growing out of 20 gal buckets

I am wondering how the late season growers are dealing the the extra disease pressures..ie late blight etc. I am spraying every other day to every third day with a rotation of 5 different fungicides. I may not grow a big tomato..but if my plants are still healthy at the end of September I will feel I have made progress. By the middle of September last year they were looking miserable.
