How do you store a tomato that has ripened well in advance of any weigh-offs? Or do you just weigh them yourselves?

You can weigh on a certified scale(grocery store )...take multiple pics with tomato on the scale with the certification sticker in the shot.. Then fill out early entry form and email it in...(can't remeber the exact address)...otherwise, if picked when it first starts to turn color, you can wrap in newspaper and put in a paper bag in the fridge...will last a couple weeks anyway..

Early entries I like to let go until they are about 70-80% ripe...that's pushing it for me..any higher and they will crack soon after picking...as i understand it, cracks are ok but leaking is not ok...fine line between the two...good luck!

Thanks Porkchop. I looked in the tomato section of Pumpkin Fanatic's site and there is just one tomato listed for Maryland and it's only 1.82 lbs. I picked a Brandywine today from Totally Tomato catalog seed that was a little over 2 lbs. Didn't know if I should eat it or try to record it somewhere. Maters from my giant stock better catch up.

I am growing for an Oct 7th weighoff. I am not sure if it will work, but am planning on potentially storing a mater for up to 3 weeks before the weighoff in the refrigerator. Will pick these maters between 50 and 70% red. Growing for a specific date makes things a little more challenging.

Supposedly keeping them in a fridge around 50-54 degrees is best.
They will still lose weight but not as fast as at room temperature.
G May kept a couple of whoppers last year in the crisper drawer of their fridge.
