As most are aware, I am doing the 10 pound challenge as I did for the past world record. I have had several requests for clarification on rules and how to weigh the fruit so it qualifies.
First of all. It has to be at a GPC sanctioned event or through the early tomato competition through the GPC.
The add on for the early tomato is:
There must be a GPC representative present or an individual appointed by the GPC to be present when the fruit is cut off the vine and also to be present at the weighing of the fruit.
You must make the GPC aware of your fruit at least 20 days before it is weighed so they have time to arrange for a representative to be present.
Any information you give to the GPC will be held in strict confidence until after the fruit is weighed, After that point, the GPC can use any pictures or recordings at their discretion.

If the fruit is weighed at a weigh off site, then the standard rules apply.

So bottom line, if you have a contender you need to let the GPC know or you could stand to loose up to $3000.00

Ha ha Eddy, whatever happened to your spirited defense of how the GPC handled Sutherland's WR and your final statement that " each situation has to be handled differently depending on location"?. Now for the 10 lb challenge a GPC has to be present for the cutting and weighoff but not for a new WR? Has this anything to do with the $3000 prize? Lol

You know Patrick it has nothing to do with the Sutherland fruit, it was judged correctly. This contest is sponsored by me and me alone with the blessing of the GPC and before I get a bunch of whining by a select few, I am doing my best to stop that.

At what measurement do you think a tomato should be at day 25 to day 30 DAP to contact a GPC representative 20 days in advance of picking. That is a difficult requirement since tomatoes have such a shorter time to maturity than a pumpkins and you cant let a mature tomato sit on the vine like a pumpkin.

30" is around 8 lbs 32" is around 9 lbs and 34"-35" should be around 10 lbs.
You should be around 30"at around 30 DAP. To have a chance. Or around 27" at day 25DAP. At this stage the tomato should still be growing 1/4" to 1/2" d a day. The thing is depending on how hot it it the tomato will start turning around 35-45 DAP ??? So at 20 DAP you should be at around 23"-25"

It is going to be a fun spring...i am going to have the iceman plant to throw all the tech at. Now to find a couple of 150 psi pumps...

10 pounds may take a miracle. I think Patrick White has the best shot at it because of the lengthy sunlight each day that he has. I am going out to buy some grow lights for my garden so I can compete with him. $3000 may be enough to entice Boudyo to come back. Maybe Iceman would like to sponsor a cucumber contest as well. Say, $10 for anything over 25 pounds? And the GPC could maybe add it as a category? Just thinking. Cucumbers seem like an up and coming category.

everybody said the old tomato record was a fluke and will never be broke, and now we have several that has passed it. I think with todays genetics and networking. It won't be long and I honestly think it could happen this year. Also remember when everybody said we will never see a 1500 pound pumpkin.
As for the Cucumber contest, Maybe someone else will step up and run with it

It would be nice to have more categories. We could do cabbage, cucumbers, sunflowers and maybe even long beans. Maybe heaviest potato? In England I understand long beans is quite competitive. There would not have to be big prizes. Just competition and recognition like it was with pumpkins not so long ago.

Mark clementz already has a tomato and sunflower contest and is always open to new catagories. Last year he also had carrot, onion,and several other catagories. So if you ask he will do a cucumber catagory. I think the carrot catagory paid over $100 for first place. The prize money is divided up by the number of people in a contest. The 10lb/$3000 challenge is perfect timing. This will encourage even more new tomato growers and veterans alike to push the limit. The enthusiasm is evident in the high auction prices paid for tomato seeds...tomato seeds, that wouldn't even of brought a fraction of the prices today a few years ago. This money goes back into the clubs. Clubs that depend on the growers. The pumpkin seed market is stale and flooded with premium genetics. New enthusiasm is needed for growth in the sport. To increase interest in a vegetable it takes a few characters that come together at once with new innovations, humor and wit to make it the next cool thing. You have Dan MacCoy growing techniques contributing to breaking the world record, Porkchop with his facial hair, sunglasses, home made tomato signs, and humor, Q Tip will wear a tomato costume when he picks his tomato, Wixom Chris with his ribbon vines and fake 12lb tomato, bnot with the winter challenge, Eddy with his generosity, the list goes on. It will take a concerted effort from great people like this to increase interest in another vegetable. It needs to be visible and on the diary's consistently.

Speaking of tomato seeds sales during the winter auctions...For the past few years, i have seen many comments by growers that can't believe how much the tomato seed lots were bringing. These tomato seed lots have helped the local clubs much. I encourage the local clubs to be generous in the prize fund for tomatoes. Increased prizes will increase interest even more...and with more interest, tomato seeds at auction will continue to provide a good source of revenue for the clubs.

Growers this year will be able to watch my secrets wixom in my diary...I have a 1 1/2 months to put together my 10 pound attempt...50 gallon drum deep water hydroponic, with aeroponic booster, temp and humidity controlled outdoor mini-greenhouse with CO2. By about July the 10 pound limit might be broken. I can dream can't I.

I appreciate your enthusiasm but some of you are a bit delusional. Only three guys have grown an eight pound tomato- ask them how difficult it is to replicate that result. Fertilization, the genetics and support of the fruit are not a problem. Growing the right blossum and getting it fertilized correctly is the first major challenge. Getting the right blossum is a numbers game. Recognizing its potential and getting it completely pollenized can be make or break you. Finally time on the vine determines how big it will get. Heat ripens tomatoes so if you have hot summers good luck. Dan S remember in Waitsburg the sun going behind the mountain at 4 pm and you thought your tomato wasn't getting enough sun? Well maybe the reason you were able to grow big tomatoes in that hot canyon was the cooling effect of the sun being blocked by the mountains. 9 lbs this year- maybe 10 next. PS bnot hydroponics causes high humidity in your high tunnel and exacerbates the issue of keeping the tomato plants at an optimum maximum temperature of 80 F. If you are usung a shade structure, not so much. Good luck all- it doesn't hurt to dream.

My mini-greenhouse will not be a high tunnel. My controller already has a function for humidity. I think a dehumidifier should fix any issue . It also controls heating and cooling. Debating if it would be easier to modify a car air-conditioner or window unit to maintain a cool temp in the middle of summer. Most of the parts needed for my try at high tech I already have in possession. The one thing I am missing is time to assemble everything along with getting ready for summer pumpkin growing. The numbers game is what I can't improve on. Will have only one high tech plant.

Patrick you obviously haven't heard of science. Its a scientific FACT the the 10lb Mater Caution Exchange Rate will multiply by a fixed net ratio of 32:2.15 making the 10lb weight achievable with dinty moore and minerals. Your boron to manganese conversion estimate makes this theory a hypothetical fact that the 10lb mark will be achieved in 2017. Try reading a book, you might learn something.
