Subject: how deep does everyone plant there tomatos

just wondering how deep we all bury our tomato plants i usually do a foot but thinking of trying a foot and a half this year for extra roots??? trying to get over the 3 pound mark,lol would love to break the nj state record its at 6 lbs.

my plants are only 3"-4" tall when i plant them so planting them 12"-18" deep they would no longer exist !!! LOL..:O) I plant them right at the cot leaf or maybe to the first leaf. i never saw any advantage by going any deeper than that ?

Pete, there are several ways to do this if you have large plants or tall spindly ones. Get your soil in shape and loose to at least a foot deep several feet in circumference for each plant. Then you can dig a trench and lay them in. You can try what you are suggesting but from what I have witnessed planting them deep did not make more roots. It did produce some roots from the soil level to about four inches down and the area a foot deep did not produce much for roots. But I suggest you try every way you can think to improve your results. I plant mine in a trench 12"-18" long and get lots of roots.
