My only problem is knowing what is the strongest trait in each and every tomato ? Will it be plant vigor or tomato size ? What will actually transfer to the new offspring ??? To me its still just blind luck on what you get !!! I plan on doing a winter project on crossing several gaint tomatoes in the winter to have the seed ready for spring planting.

I have made crosses between Big Zac and Delicious, Brutus Magnum and MegaMarv and grew the seeds this year. I got nothing spectacular but this was a horrible year here. I will plant all again next year before calling it a day on them.

On the second page of the link, the discussion continues about the F2 and beyond generations. Homozygous recessive traits can be selected as pure-breeding traits in the second generation - no need to go to 8 generations. Also, back-crossing and test-crossing to original parental lines can greatly speed up the process of obtaining a pure breeding line of the dominant trait being sought.
Anyhow, officially, so far at least, the largest tomato grown in Utah was from a Michael's Portuguese Monster X Delicious cross at 3.425 lbs. It was 3.698 lbs. when picked, but sat in the fridge for 26 days awaiting the local weighoff event. One Big Zac was larger (4.4+ lbs.) but was damaged so did not qualify.
Several other crosses produced 2+ pound tomatoes, but I had to abandon my giant tomato project in mid-August. October is when I usually get most of my big tomatoes.

I was planning on making some of these crosses during the summer, but i found it much harder to cross a mega bloom compaired to a single or double bloom !!!

That would be the best plan, but i will have to work with what i get ! Im thinking that the genetics is the main goal like what matt DeBacco did with his pumpkin snow ball.

Hey steve dont bother with the cloning. It my be more difficult to get the timming right on the flowering stage. I know by planting the seeds at the same time that the flowering time of all my plants should be at the same time.thanks for the offer but i think the seeds are the way to go.
