these are both great acomplishments, but witch one will happen first ? we are just beginning with pushing the tomato limit, and how much further can we go with the pumpkins ?

IN my opinion you will have a 2500 LB pumpkin before a ten pound tomato simply because of the rapid climb up the ladder towards that weight by the many serious giant pumpkin growers out there.

Tomatoes are a far different animal and one that could take take years to achieve another 8 LB plus tomato.

The really great thing about this is that we will just have to participate in attempting to get past Dan's world record.

Based purely on percent and ratios, we'll need a 19% increase in pumpkin size and a 16% increase in tomato size.

But if you look at long-term, 35-year trends, largest tomato size has increased by 29%, while pumpkins have increased by 464%.

There would have to be very dramatic and rapid improvements in the genetics and growing methods for tomatoes to reach 10 lbs. before pumpkins reach 2,500 lbs.

I don't see it happening, but I'll sure give it a try!

Tomato compitition barly existed 7 years ago no one even had a 5lbs tomato. Only since nick harp grew a 7.18 lbs in 2009 and hunt grew a 7.33 the following year did any one really take notice. Back in 2007 no one even grew a 5 lbs tomato. Marv meisner grew the bigest one at 4.57 now dan maccoy has nearly doubled that in just 7 years. Unless someone grows a 2500 lbs this year, I think that everyone out their is going to try dans method of growing tomatos and you may see tomato records fall every year just like the pumpkin records do now.
