First time, so do you limit the vine to one tomato? like GP. When do you start tomato for fall weighoffs?

Tim,
There is a large amount of information that one needs to read and understand in order to grow competitively.
The short answer to your question is this; You want the tomato plants energy to focus it's energy on one tomato.
That tomato is one that you have hopefully chosen from a fused bloom or mega bloom as it's more commonly known as.
Pruning of the plant is also extremely important. Pruning the plant to only one or two main stems keeps the plants energy focused on that one tomato instead of growing and maintaining excess plant foliage.
The time you plant for a fall weigh off usually takes you into June as a plant out time frame. Of course there are many variables concerning your geography, soils, the maturity date for the strain of tomato your growing, etc.
Dr. Marv Meisner is the definitive expert on giant tomato growing and is a member here. His login name is simply Marv.
Marv holds the PA state record for giant tomatos at 6.51 LBS.
His book "" Giant Tomatoes "" can be found on Amazon;
http://www.amazon.com/Giant-Tomatoes-Marvin-H-Meisner/dp/0975515314/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1397598189&sr=8-1&keywords=growing+giant+tomatoes
I along with the overwhelming majority of the giant tomato growing community cannot recommend this book enough for it's easy to read and easy to understand concepts and principals that Marv lays out in the book.
I receive no compensation for my recommendation.
Also take a look at my 2013 diary as well as others here for some ideas to also assist you.
I am always available to help you or anyone out with what I know. I don't know it all, not by a long shot but my only focus in gardening is growing tomato plants for giants only so my focus is only on this aspect of growing.
I hope this assists you Tim.
