Im thinking of grafting my tomatos this season. Im not shure what root stock seeds to use? Jonny seeds and many outher carry a root stock seed, is it really worth .50 per seeds or better off just using a good f-1 for root stock. Thanks

Maxifort, Multifort, Beaufort, and most other tomato rootstock seed have terrible germination rates and high amounts of non uniformity in sprouts. In other words it can be difficult to get the timing right between the scion and the rootstock. This issue is not exclusive to me, many others have said the same. It is due from the type of wild tomato it was bred from. I am trying to get a hold of some rootstock seed that germinates much like standard tomatoes. Its called Arnold produced by Syngenta. If you like to experiment and not like to get frustrated I like the idea of using your best seed for the rootstock. On the other hand if you want to go all in and enjoy a learning experience then get the good seeds.

Thanks bat cave that helps a bunch while we are on the root stock subject. What about thoughts on vegitative vs. generitive root stock seeds, if you trying to grow big tomatos.

The concept is a bit new to me. All rootstocks add vigor and are just better but I never thought that there was too much vegetative vigor. The tomatoes never missed a truss and had no problems growing fruit. That being said, possibly there is room for improvement or at least they believe there is. From what I can understand, the generitive rootstocks add benefits to production without compromising the shape, size, or flavor of the tomato. Take that for what it is. Outside of the giant tomato growers, these rootstocks would be perfect. Too many variables are in play with growing a giant tomato to say that grafting would be a benefit. Who knows what the affect would be on mega bloom production and that as you know is the key.
