i think it started out with certain varieties being used, but now it seems that we have enough of a gene pool of big ones from these original varieties that we should use the proven ones. i can share seeds with you if you like...harvested seeds from my 3.98 last night and will be getting some from the 4.78 soon.

they are both descendants of the "Delicious" variety. others on here can speak more about the original varieties, but big zac, brutus magnum, and megamarv are others being used to grow big ones.

I'm compiling a list of the largest documented specimens of dozens of varieties of tomatoes at:

http://www.gianttomatoseeds.com/big_tomato_list.html

I grew out many of these varieties this year and several were very impressive.

Needless to say, like pumpkins, without special care, you won't likely get a giant tomato. But I picked one just today that was 2.61 lbs. on a plant that received no pruning, thinning or other special care and had at least 50 other tomatoes on the vine.

Given proper care, I'm guessing there are at least 30 varieties that could produce 3+ lb. tomatoes.

The REALLY big ones? I concur with bigbear - those four varieties have all produced 5+ pounders.

Would anyone be willing to part with a few of these seeds ? Would love to try for a big one next year.
