hi all i have been growing giant tomatoes for aprox 15 years using a strain which turned up in my cousins lawn clipping pile so no name for strain my largest before this was 2.025kg in 07 from a megabloom of course and over the years 1.3 or larger per season was common.i pruned to a single leader and allowed the biggest per truss to stay my plants were around 4 ft tall. i have also held the record at the national tomato contest in Gunnedah of 1.820 kg entered in 2002 which has been running for 32 years rod

Hello Rod. One thing everyone is always on the lookout for is new great seed. Where are you in your growing season "down under'?" It would be nice to see a pic of your big one. I assume you are growing an heirloom? Marv

Hi Scott , thanks for the advice it's food for thought , but we also tried only sending a message without a photo and it was still rejected . We have sent a e-mail to Ken as the web site suggests to see what he thinks , we hope we can fix this soon .

Those are some impressive weights Rod! About how many plants do you grow each year for size? Think of some more interesting tidbits and history behind the variety - maybe some of the folks here can come up with a clever variety name which would be satisfactory to you and your cousin.

Any preliminary ideas?

I would love to trial your variety as well and would be glad to trade: dale@gianttomatoseeds.com. I think if several of us grow it out, we can come to some consensus about character traits along with a name.

Welcome, and come back often!

Dale

After picking some 15 fruits, here are some of my observations:

- Extremely productive, 8 1+ lb. fruits in a tight group (see pic in diary)
- Taste was better than expected: a very good, fairly sweet flavor bursts forth, while lingering flavor is very pleasant. Makes you want to eat the whole thing in one sitting.
- Somewhat hollow seed locules
- Very stingy with the seeds
- Biggest so far is 1.662 lbs., still a fair chance of larger ones
- I did no pruning, no thinning, no other special care, so I think this one could consistently grow to at least 2.5 lbs. if grown for size

The most similar tomato I have grown is Homer's German Oxheart, but the shape and flavor are slightly different.

Anyone else have feedback on this one? Ideas for names?
