Is it time to germinate? I'm in Minnesota, have never grown a tomato from seed. I know that many of the tomato plants you buy from a nursery are totally root bound, roots comming out the bottom, you have to pry them out of the container, and they still grow, is it close enough to starting time?

Depends on how much uppotting you are going to do.
I will be starting competition tomatoes within next two weeks. By the time they are ready to go out (early to mid May here) they will have had two uppottings from the starter flat and be in gallon containers if not bigger.
Take the chance any time you pot up to the larger size, to bury stem and make more roots, too.
I have a lot of local growers this year, so what I plant isn't as important as which ones I decide to keep. :)

Got about 35 different seeds to chose from but I'm with you. The 4.46 is in my first wave of starts. If it takes off like I think it should it will be in the 3rd set getting started in 6 weeks.

Richard I am a bit south of you, and I don't usually start mine until the middle of April, and the competition ones around May.

Five of six Marley's have popped so I'm feeling good about that. Only three of six 7.33 Hunt's emerged. One would think the germination rate would be passed to the offspring.

Forget the last post. One too many glasses of wine, lol. I am pleased at the germination rate of the 4.46 Marley.
