marty last season i left them in the hoop house till nite temps where in the 50's.. opened fer daytime temps,, but didnt acheive anything real big

50 at least, upper 40's just make them sit there. If you can cover them at night and give wallOwater or equivalent; I will set out with mid 40's and cover them before dark to a couple of hours after sunup. Here in altitude and 6a to 6b (they changed the zones and best resolution I can get is 6a west of town and 6b east of town) my last night of snap freeze is mid-May so last of covering is end of May.

Also make sure you are doing wind protection for the common prevaling winds, a 20mph breeze can feel about 5 degrees colder on that side of the plant.

I don't think plants are affected by windchill . When there is a windchill it is often cool and windy and when it is cool the air is usually dry. The low humidity and wind could bother the plant by desiccating tissue.

Growing tomatoes is not like being in a foot race. An early start means little. If the weather is cool the plants just sit there. You run the risk of damage with no real benefit. Patience is a virtue and especially so if growing tomatoes. Marv
