That's quite an impressive collection of giant tomato seeds!

Is there any chance that Dennis Hartung and Brandt Timm could enlighten us about the variety and lineage of:

4.84, 4.70, 4.60 Hartung
5.32 Timm 2008
?

I know of at least four varieties now that have been certified to reach Super Giant status (5+ lbs.):

Delicious
Big Zac
Brutus Magnum
MegaMarv

With other varieties claimed. Perhaps it's time to break a little from the naming convention used by pumpkin growers. A few of us have discussed elsewhere adoption of a format such as:

Delicious (7.33 Hunt 2010 © 5.0 Timm 2009)
Big Zac (5.64 Timm 2010 © 5.58 Timm 2008)
Brutus Magnum (6.25 Meisner 2011 © ?)

This convention could be easily modified if/when giant tomatoes result from a deliberate cross, rather than open or self pollination.

Any thoughts, objections, insight?

seamsfaster, say you grow the #1 world record or even the #2 tomato, and you grew it off the 7.33 hunt seed, and it was open or selfed, and it weighed 9 lbs.
would it be called:
9 lb. delicious?
or 9 lb. hunt
or 9 lb. we dont know who grew this mater?
here is an example how it gets crazy not naming your mater you grew, i bought some of marvs maters in an auction, his 6.5 mater package just says this " 6.5 delicious " 10 seeds, and a friend of mine saw the seeds on my table and asked i would like to get some of these seeds! who grew this mater! i told him to find out for
himself, so sitting in front of the computer for a half hour, still no results, yahoo search, now i said type in
4.46 marley tomato, and the search showed my tomato at the top, (try the search) now if my friend wanted to get some seeds from your 9 lb. delicious you just grew , how could he do that? what i think needs to be done is the variety should be listed on the lable, but still name, the seed and weight and cross ect...this way if a seed from a certain grower becomes a hot seed, you can get in touch with him or her, also it would help people understand that just not any delicious tomato seed or brutus magnum will grow them a big one, even if i'm wrong about the last statement, would you rather grow a seed from a plant that produced 7, 3 lb tomatoes or a seed from the same variety plant that only grew 7, 1 lb tomatoes i'm just saying.... love , scott

Hi Russ,
I know for a fact that the 5.32 Timm (08) is a 3.9 Catapano x self. I have a packet from Brant in front of me now. .........Chris

Thanks for the info. on the Big Zac (5.32 Timm 2008) and for posting at GVGO. Let's hope all the seeds get sold and sown in soil this year!

Sorry that my left arrow character (ASCI ALT 27) was translated to a copyright character. Wish there were a preview screen here. Hmmm, let's try ALT 17: ◄

Scott, you have articulated the points I was hinting at. Two years ago when I was first trying to enter the world of growing giant tomatoes, I was bewildered by the apparently huge number of varieties that were producing giant tomatoes: Timm, Lyons, Perry, etc. Where were these seeds coming from? They was no overlap at all with all the "monster" varieties listed in big-name seed catalogs.

As it stands, to those outside the realm of giant tomato growing, it looks like we're a bunch of egomaniacs, naming a new variety every time we submit a big tomato at a weigh-off. (uh, I already know I'm an egomaniac, and that 9 pound tomato I'll be growing this year will be #1, not #2!lol)

And you can have #2, to be officially recorded as:

Delicious (8.65 Marley 2012 ◄ 4.46 Marley 2011)

Levity aside, I think it's useful to not only list the variety, but also at least one generation of ancestry. If we keep in mind that what we post on these forums becomes essentially a permanent, searchable record (YIKES!), then routine inclusion of these additional bits of info. should benefit other newcomers who might be considering joining the sport.

Some of the seeds it is tough to find what variety of tomato it is. I agree that for the ones we know we need to start keeping accurate records for future use.
