Smiley is 16 inchs today! starting to grow fast!I have suported the branch its on & another side branch that supports her!I will post a pic on diary tonight of this,Could use advice on putting a hammock support under or not.should I weight till bigger??Not sure Rookie on the Toms!Im afraid hammock could cause rot or inhibit growth??

supporting the branch is more than adequate for tomato support. I have never heard of a giant tomato separating from the the stem unless it was already damaged for some reason. A hammock can cause an infection or be a host for insects, both of which has happened for us in the past when we supported the fruit from underneath.

The stem on the fruit cluster is more than capable of supporting the fruit, it will grow as the fruit grows. The branch on the other hand will need support if you have a good one going. Good luck, that ugly thing may win you an award yet.

i lost two nice mega bloom tomatoes early, because i did not support them early enough, the stems bent over and kinked. oops my fault! nylons worked great they seemed to dry off fast,and i sprayed a fungicide after heavy rain just in case, scott

Thats Everybody for feedback!Im not real confident in this Tom thing!This is your baby Chris Big ZAC 3.6.I will post new pic today We had 1 1/4 inch of rain fall yesterday!Greenest August in years!!

I think a hammock would be ok if its able to breath like mill fabric or some type of real small mesh. If its some type of clothe that doesn't dry fast or provide good air circulation that could cause a problem. I'm supporting my biggest one using a hammock made out of a piece of nylon screen from an old screen door.
BTW handyhomegrown even if smiley doesn't get overly large I really want some seeds from that badboy! LOL

Hopefully its not like a mega on a brandywine. I had some huge ones last year and one 2 lber only had 15 seeds. LOL

I use onion bags cut and panty hose never had a problem,I always think the stem supported will hold most tomatoes!Buuuut how bad will you feel if it breaks off and all you had to do was make a sling for it!! i will keep playing it safe,BUT this is just what works for me. TT

Teeshirts hold too much moisture, old nylons or tights work about the best.

As for the Suffering Better Half, Handy, ask HER for some of her old ones and tell her why. Then she knows where they came from!
