Just one can ruin your season. They get progressively larger but the ones I find all seem to be finger sized. They always get turned into bugpaste with a shovel on the concrete (street gutter) so I know they won't be back.
Been getting them around here since early July, trust me, with being head of tomato weighoff, I have heard about EVERY one found in the county.... and all the other 'mater ailments.
If you have preteens, show them some really good pictures if they don't know what they are, and offer $10 for each one they find and jar IN your own garden only (no raiding theirs etc) and they will find them. When they present the jars for bounty make sure you get them all and empty and smash the buggies yourself or they WILL get recycled for bonus... heh.

Maybe you could use BT? It says it kills horn worms on the bottle.

Usually if I have had hornworms, it's been ONE maybe two. For $10 they will comb the entire yard hard. :)
