20 years ago I was in the greenhouse business. We sold a tomato called Ramapo. People would come from miles around to buy plants. After we got them going good in our area they stopped producing seed. Now 20 years later Rutger University has started producing seed again for sale. If you want a great tasting and great producer try Ramapo.

I grew a tomato that was soo sweet,I usually put salt on them but for this,I didn't have the heart,so I've saved the seeds and grew them again last year.Not all were sweet like the parents but a couple were,and so I've saved those seeds and hope to get a better strain.Has anyone ever tasted a tomato that really rocked? I wish I knew what breed I was talking about,but wow ,it was really really sweet.Some of them had slightly orange shoulders...about big beef size,maybe smaller.

The best tasting tomato hands down is the Suddith strain Brandywine..although they lack in the yield department. Burpee has come out with Brandy Boy. Which is also very good tasting.

I've had brandywine....but the tomato I described earlier was sweet like sugar.Nothing have I ever tasted was like it.

Brandywine is one of my favorites also, but burpee seeds have a new tomato that is SEEDLESS. its amazing how far tomatoes have come

I grew Ramapo last year. I thought it was a very good mid-season red variety. Other good ones in that category IMO are Red Brandywine, Wisconsin 55, and Sioux.
Brandywine(Sudduth strain especially) is considered one of the best. Another beefsteak that can be very good is Marianna's Peace....it's meaty, with a well balanced flavor. Makes great BLT's.

Only ones I know that sweet are Sungold and they are Mid sized Cherry tomatoes..

I work in the commercial seed industry. The prefered variety for flavor is called Shady Lady. It's an older variety if you looked around you might be able to find it. It fell out of favor with growers because it is too soft and does not ship well. Newer varieties are firmer larger better yielding but don't taste quite as good. I would agree with Linus though some of the best flavor is a vineripe cherry or grape tomato.

Big Girl is another one that was pretty popular around here 15 years ago. Good size fruit, and a good flavor. My thing with them were they grew normal looking fruit and they didnt have alot of the misshappen areas alot of the new large varieties have. I looked for 3 months before I found any seeds and they were going out of business so I bought all they had 1/2 oz.
