I am going to try a Watermelon for the first time this year. Have done a lot of reading but just wanted to confirm a couple of things I am unsure about. I have about 200 sq ft to use but have different layouts available, I am not sure about how it will spread out. Which orientation would be better or does it not matter, 9x22 or 11x18? Also I am planning on using drip irrigation, as I understand typically only the stump has roots, should I be watering the entire area with drip or just a large area around the stump?

i think either of those dimensions should work. The 11x18 would probably be a bit easier for the plant to fill out. Water the whole area, the plants roots really spread out far from the stump.

From what I have learned, growers use many different layouts and growing areas differences, all with success. I plant mine on a hill in the center of 11x11,12x12,11x15 raised beds. The main will grow a little faster than the sides, but the plants grow more "round" than a kin. In my experience you will get one on the main 3 out of 10 plants so its not all about the main in melons. I do not water near the stump but water the entire bed. Good luck!
