What's the right way to start watermelon seeds? Pre soak or not? File edges? Anything like starting a pumpkin?

You can soak and file. I do not. Some folks use a egg incubator. I start mine in an old cooler with a heat mat. At 95 degrees they will pop in about 2-3 days.

thanks slammer I'm going to give watermelon a try this year. I'm also attempting grafting a Carolina cross scion to a giant pumpkin root stalk. I read about the successes of that in a1927 report I found. That's going to be my side experiment this year . but not the competition watermelon seed

I would use something different for a rootstock. Bushel gourd seems to be popular. Read up on the grafting posts.

I've read some good success stories using bushel gourds. Like I said though its going to be my science experiment this year so. I'll video and document along the way and keep everyone posted on whether success of not.

If its successful and it grows great if not I'll try other root stalks. It's for science lol
