Just curious where yall get pine straw. I rake mine up from pine thicket. I have bought bales from Lowes but the seem small, expensive, and full of sticks and trash.

Take my own. Takes about 20 minutes to get a truck load. Otherwise it's 75 bucks a truckload here.

Duh, why pine straw? I can get truck loads, just around the corner! Just as a weed deterent? I have used it for years in the strawberry patch...works the same in melon patch too? Peace, Wayne

Yes. Also allows some additional rooting if it isn't too fluffy and the web of needles gives the tendrils something to hang on to.

Dave, dad told me that pine needles would kill everything,(esp. weeds) except strawberries! And sorta thinking that they dry out real quickly, if spread around growth area. If this new thought process is correct, and can be used to mulch in around melons...I am going around the corner at least once!!! Can I use them as mulch around AG's also? Peace, Wayne

I haven't had enough experience with them to say they would or would not work. Most of mine has been around blueberries. Around melons some folks use landscape cloth under pine needles others don't. I'm still a sand man on top of landscape cloth.

Wayne, if you left the pine straw yes, but in one summer they don't break down so no wories for melons. and yes landscape fabric under the pine.

I need something to hold down the vines here in Kansas. I cant be sticking skewers around them constantly. Wheat straw is all we have out here and if you put that on top of the weed fabric which is fairly slick it would be gone instantly.

I put down weed mat or fabric and then the pine needles on top of it... it keeps the plants from burning on the black fabric, gives them something to hold on to, and keeps the weed fabric from deteriorating

Pine needles are acidic, so if you till them in they could lower soil PH. Good subject, I am going to use black weed fabric this year. I have pines and can get my own needles. Would oat straw work too? I have a few bales of that.

I used straw on one plant last year and i thought it held to much moisture. I prefer the pine straw.

So, maybe it's strawberries & blueberries, that you can pine straw directly to the ground. As I understand it, at this point...pine straw is spread on top of landscape fabric. New ?, do you cover your entire growing area w/ landscape fabric? Peace, Wayne

All of my melon area has weed fabric with pine needles on it... I remove the pine needles and weed fabric at the same time I remove my plants at the end of the season... I don't till them in...

I put down weed fabric then put several inches of compost on top of it. Worked great, no weeds and grew the biggest melons I ever grown here in Minnesota.
