My son and I have melons growing at personal best rates in extra hot humid weather. We will be there in just 2 weeks at present growth rates. Of course our personal bests aren't that great, but at least it is good news when our pumpkins and long gourds keep fizzling out.

Last Sat. C.L. Nyegaard of Marion, LA placed 1st and 2nd at the Louisiana Watermelon Festival in Farmerville with melons weighing 225.4 and 207 pounds. He used Burgess Seed Co. seeds. The melons were grown in an area that was a former pig and goat enclosure. He added no extra nutrients. The 3rd place melon weighed 173.7 pounds and was grown by Debra Woodard of Ruston, LA.

I knew that question was coming LOL. The dust is Dipel, I keep them covered in it because I have had trouble in the past with some type of caterpillar boring into the side of them.

Jake I love the dark rind on your melons, do you think that is from the dark colored tarp that you are using to protect them from the sun?

I think your right Chris. Thats why the 282 was picked early. I usually have trouble early then again late in the year. I'm not sure John. My rinds have been lighter after I started using reflective foam board, but these melons look more like my tarped melons for some reason. Its kind of funny at a weigh off you can tell who grew the melon alot of the time by the way the rind looks.

Jake if you were to throw a sheet or piece of row cover over your melon, I bet that would work too. I would be nervous about just using the dipel because I believe it takes a few days to work in the gut of the caterpillar before the bt will kill. Again I love the pictures of the melons out there. Keep em coming. I don't have any melons in my patch this year. Fusarium wilt took them out.

Yeah Jake that melon is on our 229 Edwards plant. Funny thing about it is it started out as one of our best seedlings but took forever to get established when we moved into the patch. It was growing so much slower than every other plant that I almost pulled it in favor of a backup but I remembered our 229 from last year started the same way and ended up growing a 170 lb melon. Another funny thing about this melon is it is on a finger vine only about 3-4 feet off the stump. I pollinated it just till I could get one further out hopefully on the main but this one was growing so fast with a great shape that I just had to grow it!

Thanks John I did not know that. I have not seen any get on a melon with it on there, but maybe the culls just taste better. I have to have good air circulation here as humid as it is. They will rot on top with a sheet on them. Maybe I need to go with the old seven dust LOL

Thanks guys! We have several growing good right now but it's suppose to rain every day this week. Ugh!! If they are still growing good a week from now I will be happy. Really hope our 255 keeps it up I would really like to have a good one for the Kentucky weigh off. That's a long way off though any thing can happen between now and then. Especially with a lot of rain in the forecast.Lol

Stay on top of your fungicide program. It seems like it rains every other day here in VA. I ve heard some farmers complain about disease in acres of wheat, and rot in acres of potatoes. I'm spraying at least every 4-5 days. Go get em Charles!

Keep it rollin Charles, I would love to have that kind of momentum. All these clouds are slowing me down, or at least I hope thats what it is. I've noticed in the past they seam to slow down some when its cloudy. I think there is and 80% chance of rain for the foreseeable future here.
