I have spoke with a few southern & western growers who already have plants in the ground.I'm finding the first reaction is to hit the little 3 & 4 leaf plants with ferts to push them.In the 90s I found the miracle grow potting mix to be to hot for seedlings.So I stopped using it.I think they have adjusted to that over the years it may work now.however I wouldnt fert a small plant,just mycorrhizae.A little cotton seed meal mixed just outside the root zone will help it vine out.Nothing hot, slow & steady with the melons.Water & wait for ground temps to kick in.I hope this helps the new growers to start out right.Dont kill em.

Ok Todd know you will have them all thinking Im BSing.I do fert the plants when they get about 3 feet long.What do you do Ice man wink wink!

Just kidding, Yea, I go really easy on the little guys, just fungicide, and insecticides when little at quarter rate
then start giving them some food when they start vining at about half dose.
