Hey Dave, of course not fighting anything yet here in the mdwest but was reading an article on Watermelons and they had mentioned "Black Rot" and so I was wondering what on earth they were talking about because the article never delved into the premise or what was behind it. Thanks for the reference, I'll check it out.

I suspect it's blossom end rot. Usually a calcium deficiency. I have seen it a fair bit on poorly pollinated culls later in the season.

Dave, Checked out the Anthracnose and seen it was a wide type variance of leaf blight. Got an Ash tree with this issue. I think your right on the Blossum end rot. I'll check out preferred Calcium levels for melons and make sure theres some type of respect, lighting n atmosphere upon the relationship laid out during pollination, lol. Not just pollinate n leave'em. Man its been along Winter.............lol Thanks

my first year growing my melons all started to get black soft spots on the blossom, then the whole fruit turned black in a matter of days, they were also odd shaped.

Extreme heat can also cause poor pollination resulting in BER. Keep CA 3000+, water well and set melons before extreme temps hit, you'll be fine.

The growers Notes I got in the mail too are very good reads and will help keep me out of the ditches I feel. I did read on calcium intake for melons and that does seem to play a much bigger role w/ Melons. Thanks again

Black rot is when gummy stem blight expresses itself on the fruit. GSB can express itself quite differently depending on how old the plant is and its variety.
