Everyone is allowed one post: What is the biggest thing you have learned over the years to be successful growing a giant watermelon?

I have learned that when i make a change on my plant or what i do to the melon, only do it one plant or melon a year. That way you still have the rest.

I have learned that if your stump rots on you, don't give up on growing a big melon. If your melon is on a good vine and off to a good start, you don't need a stump to grow a competitive sized melon. Just make sure the vines are well rooted and the plant will continue to grow and fatten up your giant. So I have learned to never give up.

A broad spread of manure over the entire growing surface of the melon patch. Without that you do not get the good growth deep into September. Merely augmenting the stump area is not enough.

So if someone grows and takes a watermelon to a weigh-off,and is not in a club, does that make them an out cast? I didn't know you HAD to join a club! Maybe some people just like to change it up a bit and grow some thing different. Doesn't mean they have to join a club. Just wondering.

No club membership is required to win a GPC weigh-off.
