IM going to pull my melon tomorrow and store it in my basement till weigh off time (10 days). all the leaves are dead from frost and im getting nervous about how exposed it is in the community garden that its growing in. the vines are still nice and green so i was thinking about pulling up the stump root ball and leaving the melon on the vine. i would cut all the other vines off but leave the main vine with the melon. then i would put the root ball in a bucket of water (with a air stone and air pump) in my basement . i think this might stop it from losing weight or even get it to drink up a few pounds... ive seen kins drink up a bunch of water after their cut. maybe this might work. What do you guys think?

I think you are doing the right thing. Melons will keep for a long time after you take them off the vine. I think what you are doing is even better. At the most it will only lose 2# to 4# in 10 days with out the vine.

Jake Holloway missed second place last week at Yadkin by a mere one tenth of a pound. What you are doing could certainly make a difference in how your melon places. Those who go the extra mile often times have the best "luck". Keep up the good work.
