I had hoped to wait until closer to the weigh off before this day came. I have two melons sitting in the patch that their day has come. They haven't grown in a few days now, and the stem is turning color on the biggest. Still 9 days till the little one goes to the fair, and 15 days till the big one makes it's journey to the Yadkin Valley Pumpkin Festival for its showing/weighing. Hope they don't lose too much weight!!!

If you have to pick it(the stem is bad) put it in a cool dry place. If left in the field keep it shaded & dry if possible.
as long as the stem is green, they will maintain their weight. Once picked you will lose 2-4 lbs a week.

Dont pick it & keep it(plant) watered. If you think the stem is bad & will rot the fruit, then go ahead but you will loose lbs.My 219 last year weighed 224 10 days earlier.

Pulled my smaller melon today for a new cast. It estimated 147 lbs. out on a solid floor. When we out it on the scales..........146 lbs. I was proud of my first melon, with a bigger one in the patch..........I'm comin for you, Frank!
