I was wondering what everybody thinks about getting melons started in a hot snap.We just came out of a 3 day hot snap. Now back to the 80s & 70s again great for the Kins.not so for the melons they like it HOTT!I was thinking last year my 260.5 was pollinated & grew its first 30 days basicly in the heat.the 219 was pollinated in cooler temps the first 5 days & then hit the heat.Anybody else have any comparisons like this.Just a theory. Not saying its a fact.Should we be looking to pollinate during these hot snaps???

I pollinate whenever the flowers are available. I use ice to convince the flower that it is actually cooler, so that the pollen takes.

I remember Lloyd saying something like he believes that the really big melons usually begin their growth in a lot of heat and that a hot dry summer is the kind that produces huge melons. But I am sure he meant considerably less hot than they had it in Arkansas last summer. We have a heat wave on the way here that will be the worst we have had in many years. They are forecasting around 103 for Friday and humid.

Lloyd also said that melons set after a front moved through. Implying that cooler temps allow the flower to pollinate.
