It has been really nice here for the most part. Highs upper 80's and low in the 60's with plenty of sunshine. I just wish my plants weren't so darn early. Well they are having problems setting melons anyway.

You were right Mark, your grafted plants is catching up with the rest of your plants. It will probably become your most vigorous plant.

Td I'm also having issues setting melons , is this due to setting out too early?

Zlatic, I think the bottom line is that CC plants will set melons when they are ready to. Just don't be feeding them any extra nitrogen as too "happy" a vine will be hesitant to set fruit. You might try dead-heading a vine that has a good prospect on it. That sometimes works for me to help get a melon to set. I had a couple like that last year. Some growers place a bag of ice close by the female flower when they pollinate if it is a particularly hot morning as they say this helps a pollination to take. I have never tried that method myself though.

The cold came in yesterday. We had a band of showers move in, after that it has been cold, we are talking sweatshirt weather! It looks like it will be here all week, cloudy, cool and overcast with showers. We don't need anymore rain!

Wow! Whitey,You must be comparable to the U.P..Its low 70s here & 47 at night all week.Cloudy most of the day yesterday. little sun = little growth, still to cold, need heat.I'm afraid it will be another cold summer with some Hot weeks thrown in here & there.Radical Opposite then normal conditions.I better get working on that gas line.

Coldest place on the planet here, Handy. Right now at 12:30 it's 48 dgs. Been raining for about 20 hours. All my little ponds and rain barrels and buckets are now full. Pumpkins don't look like they are enjoying the cold and wet. This afternoon I will have to dig out all my windows and plastic to cover what I have planted. Beans are starting to come up. Temp. tonite freezing and again on Friday. Have a feeling I might be shoveling snow in the a.m..

I'm not complaining. I'm not in control here. God is! I'm just anxious. This will all come to an end next year when I have my high tunnel up. But I won't start putting it up until I get the garden in for this year. I have everything protected for tonite and right now I don't think it will be as cold as they say but I'm not taking any chances. While the temperature outside is 48 it was 62 inside the hoophouse with both ends open. The pumpkins in the small enclosures looked fine despite the cold. In my small greenhouse the temp. was 84 without any sunshine or heat. When I lived 125 miles east of here everything would be in the ground and growing great guns by now.

At 4 a.m. the temp was 35 dgs. At 5:30 a.m. the temp was 32 dgs. That is from a thermometer that is in my kitchen window.I definitely had frost but everything came through o.k.. Looks like I will have to be protective through Sunday.Right now the temp. is 47 dgs. but I have a new problem. Cold wind. Two pumpkins are taking the brunt of it and getting tossed around. My 204 Dawson is still in the pot and in the greenhouse. I am feeding and treating it like it was in the ground. Don't want to lose it. Am going to do my best to still grow a melon. Might need some fall protection.

My plants have grown so large without setting any melons I have trimmed the crap out of them. I have a huge pile of severed vines piled up about 4' high this morning. I still have plenty of vines left and figure it can only help.
