Started today. Last year mine were done growing by late August for the most part, and I started a week later then this year. It might have had something to do with the prolonged heat wave from Mid June- late August speeding up growth possibly, also I think plastic mulch/landscape fabric speeds up growth also. It may not have been a good thing slow and steady growth is probably better.

im starting mine next weekend, they may grow slow because your soil temps arent up there. yes , you can keep them in a pot. let them grow. i got one plant that was in a pot last yr, because i thought i was behind. the seeds i planted inside, caught up with that plant in a heart beat. remember watermelons are warm weather plants jed. so unless you warm the soil they tend to sit and not grow.so you should be ok for awhile. i didnt plant mine outside till june, because of the weather we had. hope this helps. you can send me an email if u want.

hi everyone, im a first time grower. i have 2 plants started now. a 191 holloway and a 133 hammp which was grwn with a 291 kent as the mother plant. both have cot leaves and the first true leaf showing as well as another leaf that just started showing today. i was wondering if there was a way to tell which way the main vine was going to drop. i was also wondring when and how to start hardening the plants off to go outside in the greenhouses. i have several other seeds started trying to germinate. the two that r grownin germinated in 50 hrs. if anybody has any advice plese let me know.

Start setting your plants outside in the shade for a few hrs each day,then a couple hrs in the early or late day sun for a day or two.After that they should be good to go.The MV on a melon dont matter you can direct the vine any way you like as they are very flexible & movable.Wow 50 hrs is good!If your not confident that there harden off good when you plant them,you could shade them from noon to 4 on a hot sunny day.

Josh, Mark is right you can slowly direct it were you want it. I have always planted them with the first leaf(after the two cots) in the opposite direction of where I want the vine to go. The 191 grew as good of a melon as any I had two years ago. It produced a better plant for me than the 194. Good Luck hope you growem big.

thank you both for the advice, im hoping to grow something worthy for a weigh off this year. I had 3 out 9 seeds i started germinate in just under 48 hours, 77.7 piory, all 3 have a root tip the same length rightnow. the 77.7 was grown with a 235 edwards and self pollinated. i soaked all my seeds in neptunes kelp and water for 30 to 45 min before they went under the heat. if u could please keep chekn back from time to time as i might have more questions, my friend that has helped me get started is a punkin guy. hope to here from u again. thanks
