I have found a source of large quantities of worm castings within driving distance for what I consider a very fair price. I would like some feedback from growers who have used them for growing giant watermelons. Their web site says they provide highly available plant nutrition and will not burn tender roots.

Yes Dennis all the worms in my patch leave there poop behind.It has worked out well for me. lol Just kidding I would be all over that just remember moderation, to much of anything can be toxic.

Dennis, thats a great find, worm castings are expensive when you can find them. The N-P-K ratio is about 3-1-2 and its full of micro nutrients.

I can purchase for $49 per cubic yard and pick it up in my truck, as the store is about 100 miles away. They recommend mixing up to 1/3 by volume into your soil. So it would be very difficult and more than I can afford to get too much. Cliff, I think it is going to help my efforts a lot. Thanks for your feedback.

A couple of 4'x8' wormboxes I think, if I remember Will Wright's setup... Oftentimes the place is growing them to sell worms and the castings are just 'gold on the side'.

I'd love to be within a few hours drive, to get some too!

Seems awful pricey for 1 cubic yard. Quality compost in my neck of the woods is about half that and I would take compost over castings 7 days a week.

That is fine 1320. Personally I like worm casting really well and $49 per yard is the best price I have seen on them.So I will get a couple of bills paid and start saving my money.Yes, there is plenty of compost available that is completely free. I average 50 to 100 pounds a day picking up used coffee grounds at some local Starbucks for no cost except a little extra gasoline. And I agree it is great for growing things. I hope you have a great season. :o)

Dan Bowles told me a few years back to go to my local bait shop and find out where they get there worms. I did that and after a few phone calls I found the worm Farmer. He lives about a 40 min. drive from me. I'll go and shovle the castings into 50#corn sacks for 5$ a bag. So,make a few calls you may find some that are really close. Mike Cooper

Hey Mike, thanks for the tip. I will try asking at a local bait shop or two. But I will bet that a cubic yard of castings is close to 500 pounds. If it is, that would equal ten of your 50 pound corn sacks full. That would make it approximately the same price you pay. So I think either way is pretty good. :o)

Yes Mike, it certainly is lovely up around Norris Dam. I used to have a pontoon boat at Norris Dam Marina and I really miss the days of cruising around the lake and doing a little fishing and sightseeing.

I've never used them much because of the cost, they are very high here. Have used small amounts for tea. Ussually several hundred dollars a truck load here.
