This year I may have the privilege of growing a very special melon. It is a "Siamese" twin as there was a double embryo on a vine that developed on the same stem. The stem is very short and double wide where it connects to the melon(s)and tapers back to normal at the leaf node. It is on my 100 Masterson & I pollinated it 2 days ago with my 291 Kent. And it looks to be growing. I want to know if any of you other growers have any experience with these. Does this melon stand any chance of maturing? Will both sides grow at the same rate? And if it gets large enough for me to enter in a competition, will it be allowed as long as it meets the criteria of being sound? You can view a picture in my growers diary if you like.

Never saw it before in a watermelon. Giant Tomato growers look for this deformity and have legally weighed them in at compititions. You gotta go with it.

Dennis you have to grow that melon, just to see what happens. It will be interesting to see how they grow. Do they share a stem, or do you see stem issues with it later on? Who knows it might end up with a 100"girth. LOL. By chance if you name your melons, you have to call that one "nut", cause it looks just like................well nevermind!

Todd, the melon has a very short stem that is normal on the vine side and widens out into almost a double stem going into the melon. I deadheaded the vine before the melon was set and so the short stem should not be a challenge. You are right Todd, I have to grow this melon. It will be a great thing for people to see as a curiosity. It just fascinates me. But just think of this melon at 175 or 200 plus pounds. I think it would be awesome. Nut or nuts is a great name Todd. I think I will use it but maybe with the plural as I think it is more to the point (there are 2 of them). I think it will get a lot of laughs.lol

It was more like a abnormally wide flower. I will post the best picture I have of it on my growers diary. I will post a picture of the male flower also as it was very abnormal itself. It was on a triple long and wide stem and it was a monster size flower with the stamens arranged in a circle.Just check out the picts after they have posted.

The picts posted promptly. They are now the last 2 pictures in my growers diary. I hope you can see the flowers good enough to satisfy your curiosity.

I guess you could call it 2 fused flowers, Chris. I believe each side will have it's own seeds.

Nuts are 2 fruit that are going to be counted as one. Kind of legal cheating I think.lol

Seems like OTT's could get unreal on this one but I am very sure it will go somewhat light against the chart.Nuts may make the news, boys.

Kind of funny a lady I work with brought in a yellow squash that looked like that last year, full grown. Looked like two squash fused long ways. You can imagine what it looked like. We called it yellow nutt squash.

By the way, just think of the potential if this melon was in Chris' or Bill's patch.Or in the swamp land there with Cliff. It might have filled the back of a pickup truck by the time it finished growing. lol

Just what I wanted to hear Jake. I really don't think this melon(s) will do much since it is so late and I have had so many problems this year. Hope is there though. Thank you.

Quote from your original post..."You can view a picture in my growers diary if you like." Not until 6 replies later did you post where the pic was...I don't read everyone's reply. Get your own clue.

What's your problem Lisa? No one told you to read my posts. No one made you look through 300 pictures and I think everyone else on here knows that recent posts are at the last of the entries. So you think I have done something wrong? I'm sure you are a nice person. I guess you must have had a bad day.So try to store this in your memory: recent posts are ALWAYS at the end of a diary. If that is wrong please show me one that isn't.I hope you have a better day.

Thank you 1302, that is good advice in my opinion (lol). My mom always said if you can't say something nice then don't say anything. I just have a compulsion to respond in a negative manner when a person says something to me that isn't nice and clearly isn't warranted.
