Okay, I have seen a few diaries now with new seedling planted and some white stuff on the top of the dirt around the young seedling. If someone could please let me know what it is and it's purpose...it would be much appreciated....

Cheers...

The "white stuff" around my plants is perlite. It is a soil amendment that helps with loosening the soil to help provide better aeration and drainage. I put it around young plants because it is white and thought the reflection off the white surface might intensify the light the young plants are receiving. It has done more damage than good so far though as I had it too high around the young plant stems when it was cool and damp. This caused stem rot in some of my plants and a few of them have succumbed to it.I think perlite is a very useful amendment but not in the way I was using it around the young plants. It is great to help loosen and drain heavy clay soils. If you have sandy soil then certainly you do not need it.

Careful about using sevin around watermelons plants Mark as they seem sensitive to it.
