Am I the only one that weeds his garden before rototilling it? I wondered that on Saturday as I was taking out every last bit of crab grass that crept in from the edges, and all grass clumps, and bits of nettles. Once I had the garden well weeded and all the structure removed, it was time to till.

I said it last year and I will say it again, tilling is the purest form of redemption, washing away the sins of the past and bringing on hope for the future.

Yes I think you are probably the only one that does that. Just kidding with ya, Speaking only for myself.. I don't weed before tilling. If I do have a clump of weeds, I hit it with the tiller to loosen it then pick it up and throw it in the grass. If I had a whole bunch of weeds, I'd most likely burn the area down then till.

I wish I had a tiller. I do everything by hand.

I do not till weeds into the garden.I use a maddox and weed by hand first.Removing sod for new gardens, is the most fun.I wouldn't dare till sod into the garden, too many weed seeds.Chopping up some weeds here, turns them into millions of little weeds. So, I always weed first.

Hey Mark, where did you come across a 4' flame thrower. Sounds like something I would love to have.It must be awesome on weed seeds.

My Garden usually looks terrible until June or so. Clumps of rye coming up, unfinished compost. As the season progresses I hoe around the plants and till the row centers, little by little it starts to look like something.

I have said it before, but I pretty much keep my garden weed free. Have done so for about 15 years, so there are not a lot of weed seeds. The problem I have is that most of the weeds in my garden are things that other people would want the plants. Cilantro, dill, tomatoes, carrots, garlic, and onions. They are just growing in the wrong places.

if it is about keeping the plot as weed free as possible, then dig the complete plot by using a garden fork then cover with manure then rotovate it in including admendments. if you rotovate weeds they end up chopping up into smaller pieces and more weeds.

Some weeds rototill in nicely and do not come back. Some weeds when rototilled seem to use that as an occasion to comeback up 20 fold.

I have always wanted a sign on my garden gate that read "If Thy Weeds Offend Thee, Pluck Them Out".

I have a sign I made that hangs on my porch. It reads "If no one is home, pull weeds in garden. We'll be back shortly..." Though I'm not sure if anyone has yet...

Be carefull with a perfect weedless patch Ive seen people still tilling in July, tilling the roots from there plants & wondering why it aint growing as fast as a Heavy hitters,My tiller is done by end of June & pulling weeds can destroy root zone also,Be carefull pulling them out I like to shave them off the surface or use scissors!

Agreed about late tilling. I do not bring out the Troy but once in the spring, and then later to throw back the wilderness trying to invade the garden from the sides. I do use the Mantis to cultivate around other plants.

I painstakenly pull weeds by hand around the melons.

Very poor garden that can't afford a few weeds.

Initially I only classified a weed as something that was taller than what I was trying to grow, but with watermelons, they make lots of things weeds.
