2010
291=finger
264=main
260=finger
247=finger
236=main
230=secondary
229=finger

2009
259=finger
239=main
243=finger

main=the main vine
finger=vine that comes off the stump
secondary=vine that comes off another vine.

does that help ?

Chris, Would the finger vine be equivalent to the "back main vine" in pumpkins? (Which most pumpkin growers usually prune off.)

Looks like a finger works as good as a main.

I'm sorta thinkin I have heard the answer to this awlready...but here goes...how many fingers do you let grow? If my thumb is the main? I would guess 4? But waiting to hear from the pro's!!! Also, amazing that most are grown on fingers (including the WR 291) & not the main as AG's are!!! (3 mains, 7 fingers, & one secondary) Reason's for this? Peace, Wayne

Finger or main?I agree with mr.holloway
Just because world record was off a finger dont mean it
couldnt have been grown off amain or secondary.
Picking the right female blossom on a plant is everything.
picking the wrong female is the difference between a210#
and a 300#+.

He is new here isn't he. Hi Bill. Welcome to the message board.I am sure we can use your feedback as we know you are one of THE best growers. Now if you have a digital camera it sure would be nice if you would think about doing a gro0wers diary.I am happy to tell you I will be growing seed from your 285 this year. So how do you pick the right one to keep Bill?Do you just look for the prettiest shaped one?

Hey Mr Dreamer:As far as i know there is no certain way to pick the genetically supperior female blossom.
You can polinate several blossoms and keep track of wich one is doing best.
Or if your like the growers in the north:
After everything you polinated aborts you go with anything that looks like a watermelon because your out of time.

Wellcome Bill I am glad to see you posting.... I am not the expert that whats his name is....but I look at the ones I pollinate and look at the little melon and see how it is looking on the ground...I also look at where it is on the plant and will it have room to grow..Chris does help me out with what he thinks about mine but we have many fights (I mean discussion)on which one will grow big. all the fun of fightN in the patch!!!!! Get ready to reummmmmmmmmmmmmmmmbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbllllllllllllllleeeeeeee.

Hi Mr Edwards glad to see you here. Looking forward to planting your seeds.Do you have a certain distance out from the stump that you like your melons to set or just were there is a fast one growing? Thank you for the seeds. Jerry

Yes Bill, I think a lot of the better growers use that method. They pollinate several and choose the one that is doing the best overall. Sort of a competition among young melons to see which one will be allowed to survive. That is what I plan on doing this year.

Hey mr melonman:
You go for the fast growing one.but it should look pretty good also.
Although if you have no choice but to go with one thats bigger on one end or the other i have noticed that sometimes mother nature will even them out.
