Hello everyone.

It's been awhile since I posted. Last year was rather discouraging, though I didn't help myself out much with the way I went about things. This year I intend to do things differently.

I'm thinking about among other things adding Cobb Gem to the mix. My uncle says he grew a Cobb Gem one year that weighed 250 lbs., but I didn't see it for myself. Has anyone here heard of that variety growing a melon over 200 lbs? I'm thinking about growing a plant of that variety to go with a couple of plants from Ice Man's seed. (Not in the same hole this time. I learned that lesson, finally.)

I seem to remember reading that sometimes growers will try to fold other melon genetics back into the "Carolina Cross" lines, and Cobb Gem is one of the varieties used. Is that correct?

I've planted some in the past. For size I would stay with the Carolina Cross, but if you want some seeds I'll be glad to send you some. My seeds came from a commercial supplier. Just e-mail me your address.

I appreciate the offers, but I've already acquired some.

I haven't decided for sure exactly what I'm going to grow. I know I don't have long though.

Is it a good eating melon? I wasn't really planning on raising watermelons for their quality as food, but I would like to know.

The Cobb Gem is a very poor eating melon.

If you want a melon that grows huge and is excellent eating then you may want to try Mountain Hoosier. I have plenty of seeds if you decide you want to try it.

If I remember correctly, Cobb Gem is one of the original parents of the Carolina Cross.
