The problem with the melon is that they are often not ripe when they reach weigh off. You see that in a lot of the smaller melons.

Otherwise they are fine eating.

Another problem is that they are also often over ripe when picked. These melons will grow for up to 90 days and they are probably ripe at around 60 days.

Lots of good and helpful pictures in those diaries. The second seed is popping up this A.M. and it is going right outside for the day.

The 291 was very sweet, almost store bought quality. If you have warm/hot sunny weather , you should get a good melon.

Yes, but how much Everclear does it take to spike one of these?

some of the big melons are good to eat. but like posted already it depends on when it is picked. overall the congo, crimson sweet or mountain hoosier are better on average.

I have eaten a lot of watermelon and some Carolina Cross were as good as the best melons I have eaten.Overall though,if I were growing for eating I definitely would not grow Carolina Cross. Many of the Carolina Cross I have tasted were below average in taste.

I agree, if you want to grow for eating, pick something else besides CC.

I like melons to be sweet, crisp and bright red. The C.C's I have grown have been crisp and sweet (when picked at the right time) The flesh color is not as deep red as I would like. This year I am growing one called 'Truck Buster' Hybrid. The Willhite catalog says it has a big heart, It looks deep red too!

Big Moon I highly recommend Mountain Hoosier to you. It grows over 100 pounds, it's early , very productive, has a nice red color and tastes great.

The amount of sun seems to affect sweetness. CC's seem about 50/50, some pretty good others not so good. Mtn. Hoosier is definately the best tasting big melon. Not nearly as coarse as a carolina or kolb's gem and alot sweeter.
